Killing Them Sweetly
Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup
Who knew that consuming something made out of corn could be so toxic? New information has come to light about the toxic effect of consuming High Fructose Corn Syrup or HFCS.
Over 50% of the food products containing HFCS that were tested contained mercury, one of the most poisonous natural substances in the world.
Watch my video below.
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
The Good….
This is a real stretch but I guess it’s a good product for the makers of soda pop, fruit juice and a variety of other cheap food products because it allows the seller to make huge servings for very little money.
It literally launched the infamous “Big Gulp” type of drinks. The main attraction is that it’s as sweet as sugar and much cheaper. Most everything it’s in are low quality and should be avoided.
The Bad….
Everyone knows HFCS is a terrible product to begin with. It’s been implicated in the rising obesity and diabetic rates in this country. It’s absorbed differently and provides the liver with an unregulated source of fuel which easily turns to fat and cholesterol. It’s also raises triglycerides better than anything.
Most of it is consumed as a liquid which pumps large amounts into the body quite rapidly and overwhelms the ability to deal with it. This separates it from the effect of natural fructose which is bound up in whole food and rarely enters the body in large amounts.
And The Ugly…
Wow! Where do I start? Ok, moving beyond obesity, diabetes and mercury, you have to consider everything you’re getting with HFCS.
Most corn used to make it is GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) and is treated with various pesticides. The real beauty of GMO food though is that pesticides are actually part of the genetic makeup of the plant and so you can’t avoid eating getting some.
So now besides just getting obese and maybe developing diabetes you get the added bonus of constant exposure to pesticides and mercury, two things associated with every nervous system disorder known.
Back in 2003 the EPA issued a statement that 1 out of every 8 women in the US of child bearing years had enough mercury in their system to cause slow brain development and low IQ should they decide to conceive. Fish was thought to be the source. Now we know the danger lurks in thousands of food products we never before suspected.
Oh, and by the way, most of those scientists got the pink slip for making it public and the government relaxed the standards for mercury in the environment to protect the economy.
Look HFCS in just about anything that requires sweetener. Some of the common names are HFCS, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, corn sweetener or the most deceptive one — fruit sugar.

“Crap” category is a great idea. I know so many people whose diet probably 95% belongs to that category. I hold a BSc degree in food engineering and technology from Europe and always cook meals at home using whole foods. My son was brought up on real food. When he moved to Canada 3 years ago he started working at a downtown office in Calgary. He began to eat KFC and Macs for lunch. Then in few months he fell terribly sick, lost over 50 lbs in two month and started looking like a concentration camp prisoner. His poor long legs looked like sticks. I was devastated. We went to all doctors and healers in the country. Took all the tests and checkups possible and impossible, but none of the doctors could tell the reason. Then I took things into my hands. He had to stay at home and went on a strict whole food diet. We used only organic produce, raw veggies and fruits, teas, greens (luckily we moved to BC and had all the farm produce available). We also use only Nikken water for drinking and cooking. And slowly, slowly he began to gain normal weight and look healthy. He thought his life was over, really. And now he also knows the power of good diet and clean water. I actually have developed many healthy recipes and he was surprised how tasty simple foods could be. I am so happy to see you doing such a great job of educating people on importance of good food. Thank you very much.
Hey Natalia,
What a great testimony to clean living! Sorry he had to go through that. It shows how when all else fails go back to a simple whole foods diet. I’m glad you mentioned cooking with clean water. So many people only drink it but can you imagine pasta or rice cooked in chlorinated/fluoridated water? That would be a real toxic soup. Thanks for writing in.
Roger, how does the Mercury get into HFCS? Thanks, Tom
Hey Tom,
It can happen in a variety of ways. The obvious one might be from the process of extracting it. Mercury cells are used in the process of making caustic soda which is used in the extraction process of making HFCS. Mercury grade caustic soda is usually made in industrial chlorine plants so the possibility of it containing trace amounts of other toxins is high. When the study was done it probably only focused on mercury.
The other factor is that mercury levels throughout the environment are very high because of industry and relaxed environmental standards so I’m sure a lot of foods have trace amounts and when you concentrate a food you concentrate the good and the bad.
Hi Roger, I forwarded your site to some friends. I gave up HFCS over a year ago after a trip to Greece where I did not consume any foods that contained this fake component. Greece is sort of a “corn free” environment. After 10 days there I felt so much better that I began to wonder if I had a food allergy. Sure enough, through a 6 week process of elimination I determined HFCS was the culprit. Getting rid of this substance in my diet (which is no easy task!) Has basically cured me of allergies, back pain, lethargy and migraines. Prior to giving up HFCS, my two favorite snacks were Frosted Flakes and powdered donuts… so if I can give this stuff up anyone can. So, Roger, keep the faith and spread the word — Paige
Hey Paige,
Great story. Corn is a no no for you. Tony the Tiger won’t be too happy but you can’t please everyone. Almost all HFCS is from corn but pure fructose can be from beets and you might do well with that. Still even that is better in small amounts. Thanks for contributing.
Hi everyone,
I’m doing a persuasive speech in my speech class-Yes, you guessed right, high fructose corn syrup. I would like anyones help in letting me know(MAIN POINTS) of why this is BAD for the body. Thanks
