MSG – Slowly Killing America

Did you know that the average American consumes about 30 grams of MSG per day.  Listen below to what I have to say on how MSG is slowly killing all of us.

Staying healthy in America involves avoiding toxic chemicals in your food.  It’s almost impossible to avoid them all but with a little work you can avoid this nasty one and it’s a major step on the road to wellness.

    Hi Roger,
Thanks so much for this very important information. This will really help me to choose healthier foods for my family. I would never buy foods that listed msg among the ingredients, and I had assumed that food companies had phased it out — now I know better!

    Hi Roger:

I’m a Nikken consultant, and was very excited to get the “MSG List”. I’ve been looking for this for years. I’ve often wondered what all those un-familiar ingredients in some products I buy were. This blog clears some of this uncertainty up.

I do have a question, I’m checking all my pantry products and have noticed Nikken’s Viamin Shake Mix has whey protein concentrate, soy protein isolate, sodium caseinate, maltodextrin, artificial flavor of chocolate. You had mentioned that these ingreients with the exception of sodium caseinate often contain MSG, and to avoid the sodium caseinate. Is this the case with the Nikken Nutritional Products?

    Hey Jeane/Michele,
Don’t feel bad, it’s a confusing topic. On my video I say the following “may” contain MSG. Some people say all soy does because it contains glutamic acid which is what MSG is a derivative of. I don’t agree. In fact glutamic acid is part of all protein food, even plant protein and usually the largest amount of any amino in it. But that is different than glutamic acid manufactured and made into MSG and added to foods in large amounts. As part of soy protein or any other protein it has to be digested and assembled as part of a protein chain and excess glutamic acid is excreted. MSG is in free form and not digested as a protein and absorbed differently. For instance you might get 4 grams in a big shake or a burger, but 30 grams in a can of soup. That’s a huge difference. Also as I said even plant protein has glutamic acid. Hemp protein has 2 grams per 11 grams of protein. You can have whey protein, soy protein and maltodextrin without MSG but again all protein has glutamic acid.
most of the ingredients listed as “may” contain, can either have MSG as an ingredient or not. It’s all up to the manufacturer. For more info go to the following link and be sure to pay attention to the headings.

I was just wondering, bottom line, if Whey Protein powder and Hemp Protein powder are okay for boosting protein intake. I am pregnant and am just using it to help me reach the required 100g protein daily for pregnancy… (i eat meat and other protein sources, but not enough)I just don’t want to be feeding my baby MSG (because i know MSG crosses the placental barrier).
I am doing research on the topic but am trying to get a quick answer becasue i already bought the stuff but don’t want to take it until i know for sure.

  6. Tamara Fitz says:

Is Whey Factors (brand) 100% natural whey protein safe to take for protein boost during pregnancy?

  7. Roger says:

    Hey Tamara,
There isn’t any reason not to use it if you think your diet isn’t supplying enough.
I wouldn’t rely on it as a daily source because your probably getting enough if you eat meat and dairy anyway. Raw nuts are a good source also and supply you with a great variety of fatty acids. I would suggest you use the protein drink as an addition to a meal of plenty of veggies and don’t use more than 20 grams at a time.

  8. Roger says:

    Hey Tamara,
One of the best whey proteins is Source Naturals True Whey.
