Alzheimer's / Dementia

Now Where Did I Put My Keys?

Loss of memory seems to be part of the normal aging process.  Learn how you can slow that process down.

Afraid of Getting Alzheimer’s or Dimentia?

I don’t know of anything that scares people more than the thought of getting dementia or Alzheimer’s.

With every other chronic illness you at least are able to be present and experience the world around you. You might not like what’s happening to you’re body but at least you can make a conscious choice on how it effects you.

The thought of not being in the slightest bit of control and completely at the mercy of others is a whole different category of hell.

When the article on the mistreatment of Alzheimer’s patients in a rest home in Minnesota surfaced last year people were outraged yet secretly the fear set in.

What if that was your mom, dad or even YOU?

Is this something I should be worried about?  Is it starting?  Can it happen to me?  If you’re over forty and have had a moment of memory lapse I’m sure you’ve entertained the thought.

Well the answer is yes……..and NO !!!

Heavy emphasis on the NO here, because you all have much more control over the situation than you think.

In fact I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again.

If you can read this article and comprehend the information in it, there isn’t any reason you should ever get Alzheimer’s/dementia.

That’s a pretty bold statement, but it’s true.

I say it because you generally will have lost 80% of your brain function before you lapse into these conditions and if you understand this now—You’re Not There Yet!

11% of the People in the U.S. over 65

Have Some Sort of Dementia or Alzheimer’s

So what’s the next step?

Identifying some things that cause brain damage, particularly dietary chemicals that produce inflammation, those same inflammatory chemicals associated with diabetes, HPB, heart disease, cancer etc… and eliminating them.

The next step is looking at nutrients and foods that keep your brain healthy.

Properly Feed Your Brain

I honestly think that eliminating the chemicals in your diet and paying attention to nutrition will put you in the class of people with hardly a chance of getting it.

I betting my life on it because I’m actually in the danger zone—higher risk for both—because of previous brain traumas suffered in my youth.

I’ll make this easy for you:

1.  If a Food Has Artificial Ingredients In It Don’t Eat It.

Sounds simple but that pretty much eliminates MSG and aspartame, which are poisons to brain cells.

Exposure to these common additives have been shown to cause neurons to die within minutes. The inflammation that follows also puts a strain on the brain and creates a need for antioxidants.

If you’re not eating well and supplementing the right nutrients the fire rages on.

2.  Drink Filtered Water.

This way you’ll avoid excessive fluoride, aluminum, chlorine and chlorine byproducts that all contribute to brain inflammation.

3.  Avoid Excessive Sugar.

Sugar causes inflammation.   There isn’t any reason to eat other than your diet is imbalanced and it causes sugar cravings.  Correct your imbalances and sugar is a thing of the past.

Oh yeah, you’ll also avoid diabetes and metabolic syndrome—a common term for being on the cusp of developing diabetes, HBP/hypertension, obesity, heart disease and every other chronic disease.

It just means that your poor diet has put you into a position to get sick. Real sick.

Wouldn’t it be more fun to just change your diet and be well?

4.  Avoid Excessive Alcohol.

I know it’s fun, sometimes.

If you’re thinking about having one after work everyday or it’s the first thing you look for at night then it’s a problem.

You can add to the list of alcohol detriments the fact that it causes inflammation in the brain and dehydrates it.  It’s kinda like the chicken and the egg—who came first? Who cares because your brain is damaged!

Have a tall glass of filtered water with each drink of alcohol and limit yourself to one drink and on special occasions just a few.  Friday is not a special occasion—it comes every week.

The health benefits for your heart turns into higher cancer risks after one drink.

5.  Avoid Smoking.

The carcinogen in smoking tobacco is one of the deadliest known to man.

40% of all cancer deaths are attributed to smoking.

If that’s not enough to scare you out of smoking, the fear of Alzheimer’s probably won’t affect you either.

7.  Stress

This is a biggie.

Excessive levels of stress hormone/cortisol causes the hippocampus area of the brain to act like a magnet for all of the other toxins that make it into the brain.

Excessive cortisol is inflammatory and attracts other inflammatory chemicals to the area of the brain responsible for memory recall and processing information.

It interferes with neuronal communication and neurogenesis—regeneration of new neurons—in the hippocampus.

Damage to this area of the brain is one of the features of Alzheimer’s.

8.  Avoid Mercury

Mercury is one of the most toxic chemicals in the world and is especially destructive to neuron function.

When you ingest mercury—from food, water or amalgam fillings—around 40% of it ends up in the cell’s mitochondria, known as the little energy furnaces of the cell.

Mercury disrupts cellular energy production and when you consider that every brain cell has over 1000 mitochondria, you start to realize the potential for damage.

This is a topic I’ll be constantly visiting so keep checking back. I only covered the basics here but it’s a good start. It’s all in your control.
